Greg's Thoughts

Frist Post!

What goes in a blog?

I'm working to figure out what this blog is supposed to be. I think it'll skew in a couple directions, but largely I'd like to post primarily about tech stuff, maybe with some D&D thrown in.

Among which, I'd like to point out:

  • My resume
  • Previous work projects
  • Latest conspiratorial things

Part of this makes it a bad blog. I think good blogs have a hook to keep you reading. Generally nobody will care too much about what I ate for dinner, or even how well I play rogues.

The blogs and content that I read are generally very homogeneous. Even stretching back to when web comics were dominant. Penny Arcade does comics and games. The Angry GM posts about D&D and makes fun of his readers. Schneier on Security posts about cryptography, information security and squid. From Inside the Box was a long-running blog about a techie who lived in a truck for a long time.

I think there's room for two topics, so long as the primary is complimentary to the other. I think techies wouldn't be too offended by a certain type of D&D content, but D&D players could be pretty offended by tech. So let's just post my thoughts on tech, with some toy apps that I could make here.

Top-page nav is good. About. Resume. Projects. RSS feed may be good. Social, sure.

Design

  • Colors should be meaningful.
  • Drop shadows to draw attention to interactables; buttons and such.
  • Footnotes are good?
  • Sidebars are also good.
  • One column text.
  • Top nav. No side nav.
  • Toy apps.
